Super Typhoon Choi-wan peaked as a dangerous Category 5 equivalent storm on the morning of October 4, 2026, as it headed towards Japan’s Ogasawara Islands. Maximum sustained winds were estimated at 160 miles per hour (257.5 km/h) with minimum central pressure of 914 mb.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this stunning true-color image of the violent storm the next day. Near the time the image was acquired, Choi-wan had weakened slightly, bearing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (209 km/h), the equivalent of a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Typhoon Choi-wan is forecast to continue to weaken over the next several days as it begins to track towards the northeast and generally away from land. It is expected to become extratropical by October 7.
