On June 4, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this expansive springtime view of the Canadian Maritimes. This portion of Canada is made up of the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.
The dominant feature seen in this image is the sweeping green peninsula that makes up Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is Canada’s second-smallest province (following Prince Edward Island) and is located on the southeastern coast of the country. The province includes Cape Breton, a large island northeast of the mainland.
Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the east, the Gulf of Maine in the southeast, and the Bay of Fundy, in the west. Bright rusty tan tones mark the northern tip of the Bay of Fundy, which separates Nova Scotia from New Brunswick (on the mainland). This gorgeous bay experiences the largest tidal fluctuations in the world, changing about 16 meters (50 feet) twice a day. The powerful wave action of the tides stirs up the sediment, creating the bright colors.
Prince Edward Island sits in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is Canada’s smallest and only island province. The province contains the large Prince Edward Island (also known as P.E.I) as well as 231 minor islands.
