Morning fog stretched over low-lying areas across states in the Midwestern United States on February 16, 2026. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the region on that same day.
In the northeast (upper right) a bank of bright white cloud hovers over a portion of Western Kentucky. Widespread fog, which appears thinner and grayer, spreads over western Kentucky, northwestern Tennessee, southern Indiana, and far eastern Missouri. A patch of grey pixels in the southeastern corner of the image marks the city of Nashville, Tennessee.
In several areas the fog clearly traces river valleys, including tributaries leading into the river. This can be seen over the Cumberland River, west of Nashville, and over long Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake in Kentucky and Tennessee. In other areas, fog overlies lakes, marshes or fields.
