The Bahamas

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this gorgeous true-color image of a portion of The Bahamas on February 12, 2026.

The jewel-toned glow featured in this image is the Great Bahama Bank, a massive underwater rise that underlies several islands. The largest island, Andros Island, can be seen in the west while Eleuthera Island curves on the northeastern edge of the Bank.

The bright iridescence of the Great Bahama Bank is due to their shallow depth, and the varied colors suggests that the surface is uneven. In contrast, the dark color of the surrounding ocean marks deep water. The water depth over the Great Bahama Bank can be less than 10 meters (33 feet), but the water between Andros and Eleuthera Islands plunges to about 14,060 feet (4,285) meters.
