Fires in southwest Australia

Fires were scattered over the landscape of Western Australia in late April, 2015. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on April 20.

Several dozen fires, which are marked by red hotspots, burn in agricultural land in Western Australia. One large, very smoky fire burns near Perth. According to the Department of Parks and Wildfire of Western Australia there are many prescribed burns going on in this area. Prescribed fires are those deliberately set by fire professionals for a variety of reasons, including maintaining biodiversity, mitigating severity of wild bushfires, helping to protect lives and property by reducing the build-up of flammable fuel loads, and rehabilitating vegetation after disturbances as timber harvesting and mining.
