Dust storms in the Great Basin

Dust streamed over parts of the Great Basin in Nevada and Utah in mid-April, 2015. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite captured this true-color image on April 14.

Clouds hang over the north and central section of the image, roughly illustrating the movement of a strong cold front. The driving winds lifted dust from the arid basin, especially in Nevada (west) and in Utah, to the east. Some dust also blows across southeastern California.

According to local reports, wind gust of over 70 mph (112.6 km/h) were reported. The heavy dust created traffic hazards as visibility dropped. In Toole, Utah, the storm was responsible for a 17-vehicle accident on Interstate 80. At least twenty-five people were reported injured in that accident, with one fatality.
