Fires in northwest India

NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites have been tracking the fires over India with their daily passes. By November 2nd, 2014, the images indicated that agricultural fires in this region – so common at this time of year - had subsided greatly.

On November 6, 2014 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite captured this true-color image, which showed a marked increase the number of fires. The fires appear to be agricultural in origin, as typical in this region. The marked and rapid increase in fires after they subsided earlier is an interesting – and remarkable – phenomenon.
