Low clouds along eastern South America

A large bank of fog (low cloud) covered the coastal region of southeastern South America on August 20, 2014. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image at 13:20 (10:20 a.m. local time) that same day.

The dense fog begins south of São Paulo, Brazil and extends southward over most of coastal Uruguay, then curves out over the South Atlantic Ocean. The low cloud hovers over a wide strip of land along the coast, as well as the offshore waters. Fingers of fog also can be seen inland, particularly covering low valleys.
