Fires continued to fill the skies with smoke near Lake Baikal, Russia in July, 2014. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the region on July 14 and captured this true-color image of fires and thick smoke burning in the green taiga.
Russia’s fire season began early this year, due to a very warm and dry spring. Fires began springing up in the far northern regions in April, a time when snow typically blankets the region. According to ITAR-TASS, the Irkutsk region and the Krasnoyarsk territory have been the hardest hit by blazes.
Lake Baikal, which is at the bottom right of the image, is the largest (by volume) freshwater lake on Earth, as well as the deepest and oldest. It contains over 20% of the world's liquid fresh water and more than 90% of Russia's liquid fresh water. It lies in Southern Siberia in Russia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and Buryatia to the southeast, near the city of Irkutsk.
