Fires in eastern Australia

Many fires were burning in eastern Australia when NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead on July 11. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard captured a true-color image of the scene at 3:35 UTC (12:35 p.m. local time).

Red hotspots can be seen both in Queensland (north), but the greatest fire activity is in New South Wales (south). Each hotspot is an area where the thermal sensors on the MODIS instrument detected temperatures higher than background. When combined with typical smoke, such hotspots are diagnostic for actively burning fire.

The New South Wales, Australia Government website "NSW Rural Fire Service" catalogues all of the fires occurring in the territory. On July 11, 2014, the website was tracking 29 fires. Those fires included: Apple Tree Knob Road; Ashdell Rd, Coolangubra SF; Banksia South, Dandry; Barool Trig - Scotties Gully HR; Bobs Road Fire; Casey Dr, Watanobbi; Clarence River, Tenterfield; Coulsons Creek Rd, Merriwa; FCNSW site prep burn Mt Mitchell; FRNSW HR - Balls Head Reserve; Georges Rd, Ellalong; Henry Valley Rd SFAZ - Hazard Reduction; Hwy, Ellenborough; Kielys Rd, Mooball; Lynches Creek Rd, Lynchs Creek; Mahers Rd, Bellingen; Maynes Tr hazard reduction Dthinna Dthinnawan NP; McGilvray Rd; Myall Creek Rd, Bora Ridge; Nombi St, Mullaley; Northern Block SFAZ; NPWS HR - Macmasters Ridge LMZ; NPWS HR Border Loop; NPWS HR CCA Butchers Ck LMZ; NPWS HR Corfes Road; NPWS HR Eve Creek LMZ; NPWS HR Pipers LMZ HR; NPWSHR Ducks Ridge SFAZ; NPWSHR-Quarry SFAZ; Peacock Creek Rd, Bonalbo; Tanban Rd, Collombatti; Tryon Rd HR; Warrell Waters Rd, Gumma; Washpool Creek Rd, Booral; Woodlands Rd Nabiac; Bago SF; Hungry Head Rd, Urunga; Land Search Watsons Creek; Packer Rd, Lower Portland.
