MODIS Land Rapid Response Team,

A thick winter haze continued over Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal on February 25, 2014 when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite captured this true-color image. The entire region is covered with haze and smoke, with a large veil of gray pouring off the coast of West Bengal, India and western Bangladesh. A thick, arching, river of smoke and haze extends from the eastern coast of India to the tip of Myanmar (Burma). All the land in the image, including Myanmar (Burma) has evidence of haze.

Such haze is common in the region, especially in the winter. The pollution arises from agricultural fires, used to ready the land for planting and for improving pastures at certain times of the year, as well as using coal-fired heating. The home use of wood, fire and dung to fuel cooking fires, as well as an increase in vehicles and industrial pollution also worsens the haze.
