Our May weather is relatively predictable as we are in the middle of our dry season at that time. The region becomes much less predictable after July 1st. For May, we expect total monthly precipitation of about 10mm, an average daily temperature of about 17 C (62.6), and, probably most importantly, a total monthly wind flow of about 3000 km. Thus, expect warm, dry, windy conditions, especially in the afternoons. In F units, the long term May daily max is about 90, and the min is about 50, with a daily mean of about 65. For the last two weeks of May, expect daily temps to get up into the mid 90's, but night time (and early morning) temps can drop into the 40's. In other words, pack teeshirts, sun screen, and a light jacket... As for other environmental hazards, our prairie rattlers will be active in May, but they are seldom a noticeable element. We will not have any livestock in the vicinity of the experiment, but the african antelope will be in the area. The occassional tall tale from some of our staff can be hazardous, if you are susceptible to having your leg pulled. Otherwise, it is a pretty safe environment, and we are a long way from local saloons... ********************************************* Kris Havstad USDA/ARS, Jornada Experimental Range Dept. 3JER, NMSU, Las Cruces, NM, 88003-0003 email: khavstad@nmsu.edu voice:505-646-4842 fax:505-646-5889 web site: http://www.nmsu.edu/~jornada/
