Hi, Here are some details on the January meeting at Jornada LTER. The USDA-ARS folks from Beltsville (Ritchie, Kustas) who operate the tower will be meeting with the Jornada Experimental station (a.k.a. LTER group) for two days, January 13 and 14 in Las Cruces, NM. I suggest any MODLAND person going down stay though January 15th as Barbara Nolan of the LTER has suggested we can get a tour of the site/facilities at that time. Accomodations: There is a Comfort Inn 505-527-2000 on S. Valley Dr., a Holiday Inn 505-526-4411 and Holiday In Express 505-527-9947. Air travel: You would actually fly into El Paso. It is about 45 miles from Jornada to the El Paso airport. Our contact there is Barbara Nolan (505-646-4465) (bnolen@JORNADA.NMSU.EDU). Barbara has represented Jornada at the various MODLERS meetings, so is familiar with our/EOS interests. I am setting up a homepage with images of the site -- for a circle of 2 km radius around the 100 foot tower, the elevation change is 9 m, so it is essentially flat. It appears no significant landcover/topography change occurs until approximately 7 km from the site (Rio Grande River). LAI/fAPAR data are collected at least twice a year there, and in addition to the main tower, there are two auxilliary sites which sport Bowen ratio flux instrumentation. To get an idea of the vegetation and an aerial view, see http://Lternet.edu/about/sites/09_jrn.htm. I am hopeful Jim Conel/AirMISR and ASTER can join in this, although we have only communicated on generalities thus far and have not discussed this particular site/time. More on that as I find out things. Again, we most likely will be working this site around May, 1997. Alternative date would probably be August. Regardless, this will be critical planning meeting and a chance to set up collaboration with a site that would seem a great candidate for long term EOS validation.
